PNG, Apple patent 5379129

"Apple patents perturb PNG programmers"

"At issue is patent number 5379129, filed by Apple in May 1992 and granted
to the company in January 1995. The patent describes a "method for
compositing a source and destination image using a mask image".
Essentially, it covers how computer software may blend two images using a
third, the mask, to determine how the two are melded together."

Nydeligt. Som jeg husker det er PNG fra 1993 el. 1995 og falder altså
(måske) ind under dette patent.

Hvad nu? LZW(GIF) udløber i 2003 - skal vi så have en "burn all PNG-day"?
(Eric Raymonds ordvalg var vist lidt kontroversielt.) Udløbet af LZW vil
iøvrigt betyde at SSLUG kan distriburer "Friheden til at vælge" i
komprimeret PDF-filer, hvilket vi ikke gør nu. (I har båndbredde nok ik'?)

Eller vi kan få patentet underkendt.

Apple har ikke håndhævet patentet i de 6 år de har haft det, kan det
bruges?

Eller skal vi blot gå over XMB, PPM eller andre gamle ukomprimerede
standarder?
