Oracle har i et stykke tid været en aktør inden for fri software - omend en mindre eller rettere en ganske niche-præget en af slagsen. (Oracle's input til fri software har i høj grad drejet sig om kerneting, som var nødvendige, hvis Linux skulle kunne være fundament for Oracle's "Unbreakable Linux kampagne).

Jeg tror at ethvert gæt på Oracle's (eller Larry's :-) motiver vil
være forkert, hvis man stiller det op som et simpelt valg mellem
alternativer.

Der er snarere tale om at opnå flere ting - måske:
- Mindshare
- Accept af et firma med proprietær software i OSS miljøet
- Lidt "do it to them, before they do it to you"
- Konkurrencefordele (f.ex. overfor IBM med DB2)
