Jeg var netop kommet til nogenlunde den samme konklusion, da jeg
laeste din posting - bl.a. v.h.a. noget jeg fandt med Google samt
MySQL manualen.

For det tilfaelde at nogen skulle staa med samme problem en anden
gang:
Man kan starte daemonen med --skip-grant-tables option og udstede
# mysql -h localhost mysql
Herefter koerer man foelgende query:

update user set password = password('nyt_password') where user = 'root' and host
= 'localhost';

...hvor 'nyt_password' er det oenskede root-password. Og saa denne query:

flush privileges;

Til sidst genstartes daemonen. Saa staar man i samme tilstand som den
du beskriver.
