Jeg kan ikke få det til at virke.
Jeg er inde som root, og har med touch oprettet nogle filer:

z900:/tmp/test # ll *
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBCd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBc

A:
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 96 Sep 16 17:24 AB
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBCd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBc

B:
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBCd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBc

Det ligner det, jeg mener at Daniel beskriver som sin virkelighed.

z900:/tmp/test # rename -f 'y/A-Z/a-z/' *
z900:/tmp/test # ll *
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBCd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBc

A:
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 96 Sep 16 17:24 AB
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBCd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBc

B:
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBCd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 16 17:22 aBc

Som det ses, bliver hverken filer eller dir omdøbt.
Har du et bud på, hvad der er galt?
