dine partitioner ikke hedder noget med /dev/sdc når alle diske er
sluttet til?

Nope, alle USB/Firewire enheder kommer til at hedde /dev/sdc et-eller-andet...
Ville være vældig praktisk hvis de hed /dev/{sdc,sdd,sde..}


Det burde kunne klares med udev og nogle udev-regler ala dem på
  http://www.reactivated.net/udevrules.php#example-camera
